Program Content Questions

1. Is the NorthLegal Bankruptcy Conference organized by the same people who organized the "NLF Bankruptcy Conference" that was held in 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2006?

Yes, it is.  For the first five years, the conference was sponsored by The North Law Firm, and was known as the "NLF Bankruptcy Conference."  In 2007, The North Law Firm split into two entities.  Legal services are now provided through the law firm of Moore Brewer Jones Tyler & North, and training services are provided through a separate business entity known as "NorthLegal Training and Publications."

Program Content Questions

1. Is this program really for credit unions?

Primarily, yes. The NorthLegal Bankruptcy Conference is intended to address the unique challenges credit unions face when dealing with bankruptcy, and is designed for and marketed only to credit unions. Although bank and other financial institution representatives are certainly welcome, the program is tailored to meet the needs of credit unions. Of the hundreds who have attended the NorthLegal Bankruptcy Conferences so far, only two have been representatives of anything other than a credit union, a credit union league or association, or a law firm representing credit unions.

2. Will there be guest speakers?

It is likely there will be guest speakers at both the Las Vegas program in August 2007, and the Orlando-Lake Buena Vista program in January 2008.  (Prior guest speakers have included bankruptcy judges, a Chapter 13 Trustee, an Assistant U.S. Attorney, the Vice President of Legislative Affairs for CUNA, and credit union league attorneys. Watch here for additional information as it develops.

3. What materials are provided? Do you have additional materials that I can buy for an extra fee?

Absolutely all written materials are provided as part of the program price; there is nothing extra you must (or even can) buy. Program materials include detailed information concerning the types of bankruptcy, what the automatic stay is and how to obtain relief from it, what you should look for when analyzing chapter 7 and chapter 13 bankruptcies and the circumstances that allow you to fight each, and much more. Also included are sample letters and detailed worksheets to use when dealing with bankruptcy cases when you return to your credit union.

4. May I just buy the written materials without attending the Conference?

Sorry, but no. Although the program materials are comprehensive, they are not intended to be used independently from the Conference.

5. I've attended the one-day programs Eric North has conducted for my credit union league in the past. Will this program really be much different?

The primary source of training for credit union representatives will, and should, remain through their credit union leagues. Many credit unions simply cannot afford the time nor the expense of traveling to a program such as the NorthLegal Bankruptcy Conference, and for those credit unions their local league or association programs remain the best source of information available, whether presented by Eric North or by another attorney.

On the other hand, at the programs Eric presents for leagues each year, the number one "wish" expressed by attendees is to have a multi-day program. The subject of bankruptcy is so broad, and there is so much to cover in order to cover it right, that it really cannot be dealt with thoroughly in a single day. The NorthLegal Bankruptcy Conferences for Credit Unions are intended to serve those who want that more in-depth training.

The basic content of the NorthLegal Bankruptcy Conference is similar to, but much more detailed than, that presented in the single-day programs. Those who have attended both single-day and multi-day conferences by Eric and who have offered comments, have universally commented that they gained greater understanding by having the additional time for training. Of course, the ability to interact with other participants from around the country added to the experience for those who have been able to attend.

Hotel Room Questions

1. Must I bring the credit card that I use to reserve my hotel room with me to the Conference?

Not if you plan ahead. Many participants use a card issued in the name of the credit union to make their hotel room reservations. If your name is shown on the card, just bring the card with you to the program.  If your name is NOT listed on the card, you will need to complete an Authorization Form and bring it, along with a copy of the card and of the drivers license of the person whose name is shown on the card, with you.  You may obtain the Authorization Form in Word format by clicking here.

"Special Session" Workshop Questions

1. May I attend the Special Session workshop on Thursday afternoon and Friday morning without attending the main program earlier that week?

We're sorry, but no. The workshop is meant to build on information presented during the primary program, and training will proceed under the assumption the participants are familiar with information presented during the primary program. If those who did not attend from Monday through Thursday were to join us for the workshop, training would be delayed as materials presented earlier in the week would be presented again.

2. I really can't afford the time to attend the Special Session workshop. Is it still worthwhile for me to attend the main program from Monday through Thursday?

Absolutely! During the main program, the subject of bankruptcy will be covered as thoroughly as possible during that time. Even those who cannot attend the "extra day" will leave with a wealth of information about how bankruptcy works and solid direction concerning how to analyze and fight bankruptcy cases. The special workshop simply offers participants who can spare the additional day the opportunity to participate in hands-on analysis and handling of real-world cases, to further develop their skills and lock in their understanding.
