Introduction
to Bankruptcy
A NorthLegal Webinar
Recorded September 28, 2006
Program
Description
Does
someone at your credit union need basic training regarding the
bankruptcy process? Not all of the nitty-gritty details, but
a solid introduction and overview?
Perhaps
it's a new collector who is first learning how to
handle bankruptcy cases, or a seasoned collector who
understands the importance of knowing about bankruptcy laws that affect
the collection process. Or
perhaps it's a loan officer or a member of
the credit committee who wants to make better loans. Maybe
it's even a someone
in management who
is responsible for oversight of bankruptcy, or a smart director,
who recognizes that he or she can make more intelligent management
decisions based on fact, not hype, with a little better understanding
of what bankruptcy is all about. Such
a person may not yet be ready for, or even need or want to know, all
of the finer details concerning how to fight a bankruptcy case, but
may really benefit from a program that presents "the big picture."
Bankruptcy
filings may be down this year in the wake of 2005 "bankruptcy reform"
legislation, but they haven't gone away entirely. In fact, many
parts of the country are reporting that new filings have increased
in each of the last few months, as potential debtors and their attorneys
become more comfortable with the new procedures. Credit unions
must continue to be vigilant to understand how to fulfill your obligations
and to protect your rights.
This
NorthLegal Webinar is designed to meet the needs of the person who
is just beginning to learn about bankruptcy, or the person who needs
to know enough to make good loans or to effectively supervise bankruptcy
collectors. During
this program, credit union attorney Eric North discussed:
- What
the different types ("chapters") of bankruptcy are, what
each was designed to do, how they differ from one another, and how
each affects your credit union.
- Generally,
what things credit union collectors should look for when attempting
to maximize recovery through bankruptcy.
- Why
rules are different in different parts of the country -- even though
we all follow the same law -- and what your credit union can do about
it.
- The
language of bankruptcy: What the various words used by attorneys,
courts, and bankruptcy professionals mean.
- An
introduction to the "automatic stay" -- when it begins
and ends and how it affects your credit union.
Take
advantage of this opportunity to train multiple members of your credit
union's staff, management, or board, concerning this specific important
topic, all for one low price in the convenience of your office!
